Choosing a Career: Where you are heading?
It's important to think about planning your career - not
just getting a job. Ultimately you want to end up working
in a role that utilises your passions, skills, abilities and
experience. This doesn't happen by accident. You need to make a
plan.
What would be the ultimate job for you? What would you be doing?
More importantly, what wouldn't you be doing? What skills and
abilities would you be using? Where do your strengths lie and how
much of your day would you be using them?
There are many career planning tools out there, to help you work
through the myriad of choices you need to make.
Here's four questions to help you get started…
- What are your interests? (people, things, activities, etc)
- What are you skills and natural strengths? (your abilities)
- What's important to you? (your values)
- How do you like to work? (preferences)
If you're having trouble answering these questions, ask your family, friends or even current work colleagues to help you out. Set aside half an hour, talk through each question and write down their feedback. You might be surprised what you learn about yourself!
